v1.3, v1.4, v1.5.The evening the app became part of the phone, not just an app on it.

Product updates · 5 min read

In the second half of the same long day, 17 August 2026, Mommy Refuel gained a real explanation of its own score, Siri and Shortcuts support, a Doctor Visit Mode, and genuine Apple Watch, widget, HealthKit and Live Activity integrations — then a hardening pass to make sure none of it was fragile.

Key takeaways

  • 17 August 2026, evening (21:43–23:11): score explanation and 'What Changed', App Intents (Siri/Shortcuts/Spotlight), Doctor Visit Mode, then real Apple ecosystem integration and a hardening pass — v1.3 through v1.5.
  • v1.4 (version 1.4.0 build 2, 22:52) added a real Apple Watch app, a WidgetKit extension, Live Activities for rest/reset windows, on-device voice input, and an opt-in read-only HealthKit connection.
  • Doctor Visit Mode generates a wellbeing-summary PDF over a chosen window — never your AI conversations, full journal, contacts, or reproductive data.
  • v1.5 was a dedicated hardening pass: corruption-tolerant persistence, a genuinely complete 'Delete Everything' across every surface (including the widget and Watch), and Ukrainian crisis-keyword coverage for safety routing.
  • By the end of the night, the app had 114 tests passing, up from 40 at lunchtime.

Where and when

This is the second half of 17 August 2026 — from 21:43 to 23:11:

  • 21:43 — UI fix: the 'Ask for help' button on Today's focus card no longer overlaps the text (84f813d)
  • 21:56 — Score explanation + 'What Changed', Refuel AI as a navigator, App Intents, Doctor Visit Mode — v1.3 (260b664)
  • 22:05 — Care Circle completion loop, a deterministic support insight, user-picked focus goals, retention tracking, 15 new tests (cb330d8)
  • 22:10 — Full Ukrainian for v1.3 + development-status docs (416db10)
  • 22:52 — v1.4 device integration: real HealthKit, an Apple Watch app, WidgetKit extension, Live Activities, on-device voice input (version 1.4.0 build 2, c8129e2), plus its release docs (a7f922f)
  • 23:11 — a cluster of v1.5 hardening fixes and tests: persistence corruption-tolerance and complete deletion (50066c1), safety crisis recall and reliable reminder routing (9007880), VoiceOver labels for the widget and Watch (ce1cadd), regression tests (c31188f), and a beta-hardening status report (a65f6ad)

All of this stayed in the repository — still no App Store or TestFlight submission at this point. That step is covered separately, in the v1.6 / launch-readiness post.

Explaining the score, instead of just showing it

Up to this point the Refuel Score existed, but it didn't explain itself well. v1.3 added a 'Why this score?' view with a baseline-relative label and a deterministic 'What Changed' card — a plain, day-over-day breakdown of sleep, energy and mood deltas, with an honest fallback when there isn't a clean story to tell. It's a small thing that matters: a number without a reason behind it isn't useful, it's just another thing to worry about.

Siri, Shortcuts, Spotlight — and Refuel AI as a careful navigator

App Intents let you check in, start a 2-minute reset, view your Refuel Score, view Today's focus, ask for help, or open the Weekly Report from Siri, Shortcuts, or Spotlight — all built on a deliberately non-sensitive 'shortcut snapshot' (score and focus only). No reproductive, symptom, or crisis data is ever returned in a Siri dialog; that boundary was tested explicitly, not assumed.

Refuel AI also became able to act as a navigator inside the app — with an expanded allowlist (open Cycle, prepare a doctor summary, view the score explanation). The important design decision here: the AI only suggests a destination, and the app itself validates and performs the navigation. There's no arbitrary navigation, and nothing safety-critical can be bypassed through this path.

04

Doctor Visit Mode

Doctor Visit Mode lets you generate a wellbeing-summary PDF over a window you choose — 7, 14, or 30 days — with selectable sections. It's built to be genuinely useful in an appointment and nothing more: it never includes AI chat transcripts, your full journal, your Care Circle contacts, or reproductive data. It's a generalized version of the report/PDF pattern the weekly report already used, aimed specifically at the conversation you have with a doctor or midwife.

v1.4: real Apple Watch, widgets, Live Activities, HealthKit, voice

At 22:52, version 1.4.0 build 2 landed the real device integrations that the earlier abstractions had been preparing for, all while keeping the iPhone archive green throughout:

  • HealthKit — a real, read-only runtime for sleep, steps, menstrual data import, and resting heart rate, with manual entries always taking precedence and clear provenance shown in a per-category 'Health Connections' UI.
  • Apple Watch app (MommyRefuelWatch) — home screen, quick check-in, 2-minute reset, and help handoff, reusing the same domain models as the iPhone app, synced over WatchConnectivity with an offline queue.
  • Widgets (MommyRefuelWidget) — Home Screen and Lock Screen families, reading a shared snapshot through an App Group.
  • Live Activities — a Rest Window / Reset activity with Dynamic Island support, bounded to non-health-state information only.
  • Voice input — on-device speech-to-text, with no audio or transcript retention.

All of it routes through one canonical app route shared by widgets, the Watch, App Intents, notifications, and deep links — one source of truth instead of five ad-hoc ones. 114 tests were passing by the end of this commit, up 26 from where the day started this section.

v1.5: a night spent hardening, not adding features

The last stretch of the night, all logged at 23:11, was deliberately not about new features. It was about making sure everything shipped so far was actually solid:

  • Corruption-tolerant persistence — each saved field now falls back independently, and arrays decode lossily (dropping only the bad entry), so one malformed field can no longer silently wipe an entire user's saved state.
  • A genuinely complete 'Delete Everything' — it now purges the widget and App Group snapshot, the Siri/Shortcuts snapshot, the sync ledger, Watch caches, and Health-connection flags, and ends any running Live Activity. No deleted user's data was left behind anywhere on the device.
  • Ukrainian crisis-keyword coverage — localized self-harm language now correctly routes to the crisis screen instead of to the AI, closing a real safety gap in the Ukrainian version (still flagged as needing clinical and native-speaker review, not yet a finished claim).
  • Reliable reminder routing and VoiceOver labels for the widget and Watch score, so meaning (not just colour or a bare number) is conveyed on glanceable surfaces.

None of this changed what the app does. It changed how much I could trust that it does it correctly, every time, for every user — which mattered more to me than any new feature would have that night.

Questions mothers ask

Could you use the Apple Watch app or widgets by 17 August?

The code shipped that night, in the repository. Whether a given build reached a real device or TestFlight is a separate step, covered in the launch-readiness post.

Does Doctor Visit Mode share your AI conversations with a doctor?

No. It deliberately excludes AI chat transcripts, your full journal, your Care Circle contacts, and reproductive data — only the wellbeing summary sections you choose.

Is HealthKit connected by default?

No. It's opt-in and read-only, and manual entries in the app always take precedence over imported Health data.

Was the Ukrainian crisis-safety fix clinically reviewed at this point?

No — it improved recall for self-harm language, but the note in the codebase is explicit that it still needed clinical and native-speaker review, and I'm keeping that distinction honest here too.

Availability can vary with the installed app version. Statuses are founder-confirmed at the time of writing.

September 20: fixing a real language bug, builds 23-24

One bug on September 20 bothered me more than most: switching languages could leave half your screen in the old one. Here's what caused it, how I fixed it, and what else shipped that day.
